Morning Meeting: Starting Our Day Together
Humans are made for connection. That’s why we begin our days at Sunnyslope with Morning Meeting. It’s a time for students and teachers to come together, talk, laugh, listen, and get to know one another beyond the work they do at school. Over time, those conversations matter. Students learn about one another, find common ground, and build the kind of classroom where they feel known and valued. We want every child to walk into their classroom knowing, I belong here. My teacher knows me. My classmates care about me. This is a place where I can learn.
That kind of classroom community doesn’t happen all at once. Early in the year, Morning Meeting conversations are often light and easy: favorite foods, weekend adventures, or a silly question that gets everyone talking. These low-risk conversations help students build trust and confidence as they learn to listen, respond, and share their own thinking. As the year progresses, teachers can guide students into more meaningful conversations about friendships, classroom challenges, different perspectives, and the things that help a community work well together. Students become more comfortable speaking honestly, listening with curiosity, and working through the small conflicts that are a natural part of learning and growing alongside other people.
Morning Meeting is more than a fun start to the day. It is one of the ways we intentionally create the conditions for children to learn at high levels. When students feel connected and cared for, they are more willing to ask questions, take academic risks, make mistakes, persevere when something is difficult, and learn alongside one another. The time we invest in connection helps make deeper learning possible.
